HELPING THE WORLD RECOVER
FROM COVID-19

Dry ice is an essential contributor to global vaccine distribution

AT WHAT TEMPERATURE DOES THE VACCINE NEED TO
BE STORED?

Most vaccines currently in development require storage and shipment at about -70°C ±10°C (-94°F ±14°F). Dry ice is the only cooling medium capable of maintaining these temperatures throughout transit.

WHICH SIZE AND FORM OF DRY ICE IS NEEDED?

All vaccine shipments require 10mm pellets. This is the standard that was set as the most effective format by Pfizer.
Larger nuggets, such as 16mm will not work because the required dry ice amount of 22 kg (48.5 lb) cannot fit into the specially designed boxes. Slices will not work either.

HOW IS DRY ICE USED IN THE COOLING TRANSPORT CHAIN?

At the pharmaceutical facility, dry ice is dosed directly into specially designed thermal shipping boxes or “soft-boxes” containing from 195 vials to 975 vials (each vial contains five doses of the vaccine). Each soft box contains 23 kg (50.7 lb) of dry ice.

In transit to the vaccination centers, dry ice maintains the temperature of the vaccine for up to ten days. Once the vaccination center receives the vaccines, they have three options for storage:
Option 1:

Pfizer thermal shipping box in which the doses arrive

These can be used as temporary storage units if the dry ice is refilled, or re-iced, within 24
hours of receiving the shipment. The boxes must be re-iced again on day five and
again on day ten and can be used as storage for up to 15 days.
Option 2:

Refrigeration units

These are commonly available at most hospitals and can store the vaccine for five days at 2-8°C (35.6-24.4°F) conditions.
Option 3:

Ultra-low-temperature freezers

These freezers can extend shelf life for up to six months, but are not commonly found. The freezers maintain a consistent temperature of -70°C ±10° (-94° F ±14°F)
